In a chilling incident from Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, a family was violently attacked after a woman was branded a witch. Armed with axes and sticks, villagers stormed into her house, turning blind belief into brutal bloodshed. The attack claimed her husband’s life and left her children hospitalised, exposing the frightening grip of superstition and mob violence.
What had happened?
The incident took place in Gadi Vankda village on May 19. According to police, a group of 12 villagers, including four women, stormed into the house of 50-year-old Manu Bhai Damor and his family. Armed with axes and sticks, the mob allegedly accused Manu Bhai’s wife, Kamalaben, of being a ‘dayan’ (witch) and demanded that she be killed.
As per reports, the villagers believed that the woman of the house was practicing witchcraft. To prevent such an act, the villagers gathered and marched towards the house of Manu Bhai Damor. But what began as rumours soon turned into deadly violence.
The attackers allegedly barged into the house and started beating family members without warning. During the attack, they started shouting that Kamalaben was a ‘dayan’ (witch) and should be killed. The family was caught off guard, and the violent situation quickly escalated into a brutal assault.
In the middle of the chaos, Manu Bhai’s son Jitendra tried to protect his family, but police say he was struck on the head with an axe and seriously injured. Even after he collapsed, the assault reportedly continued.
The violence became even more brutal when four women from the mob allegedly dragged Manu Bhai out of his house and into a nearby field. There, he was repeatedly attacked with axes and sticks, suffering severe head injuries.
During the attack, the two children of Manu Bhai were also severely injured while trying to protect and save other members of the family.
Fighting for his life in hospital for nearly a week, Manu Bhai finally succumbed to his injuries on May 26. His two sons, who were hurt while trying to save him, are still undergoing treatment.
Police have arrested all 12 accused and registered a murder case. Investigators believe the attack was not sudden but may have been planned, fuelled by superstition and rumours branding Kamalaben as a witch. Further investigation is underway.
