India’s space journey entered a new chapter on Saturday as Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket. The mission, named Mission Aagaman, placed six payloads into a 450-km low Earth orbit, making India only the third country in the world, after the United States and China, to demonstrate private orbital launch capability.
The successful launch is being seen as a landmark moment for India’s growing commercial space industry, proving that private Indian companies are now capable of designing, building and launching orbital rockets.
Launch Delayed, But Mission Ends in Success
The excitement at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota briefly paused when the countdown was automatically halted around five minutes before liftoff. Engineers detected a minor software-related issue in the ground systems, forcing a delay of about 35 minutes.
After the issue was resolved and the launch sequence restarted, Vikram-1 lifted off at 12:05 pm, successfully beginning its journey into space.
The rocket completed its planned mission, delivering all six technology demonstration payloads into the intended orbit.
A Major Achievement for India’s Private Space Industry
The success of Vikram-1 is more than just another rocket launch. It marks the beginning of a new era where private companies can play a leading role in India’s space programme.
Until now, orbital launches in India had been led by ISRO. With Mission Aagaman, Skyroot Aerospace has shown that Indian startups can also build and operate advanced launch vehicles capable of reaching space.
The achievement also comes 46 years after ISRO’s SLV-3 successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit, a mission that made India one of the few nations capable of launching satellites independently. Vikram-1 now carries that legacy forward into the private sector.
Built in India, By Young Indian Engineers
Skyroot Aerospace was founded by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. According to Chandana, Vikram-1 was completely designed and built in India by Indian engineers.
The project was developed by a team of nearly 1,000 people, with an average age of just 28 years, highlighting the role of young talent in India’s rapidly growing space industry.
Speaking after the successful launch, Chandana described the moment as emotional.
“Everybody’s heart was waiting for India. Everybody was waiting for Mission Aagaman. We made it happen,” he said.
He added that successfully reaching orbit on the very first attempt exceeded even his own expectations.
Advanced Indigenous Technology Successfully Tested
Vikram-1 is a 22-metre-tall, seven-storey launch vehicle weighing around 45,000 kilograms at liftoff.
During the mission, the rocket successfully demonstrated several technologies developed by Skyroot, including:
All-carbon composite rocket structure
High-thrust solid propulsion stages
Advanced 3D-printed rocket engine technologies
The complete flight lasted about 18 minutes, slightly longer than originally planned, while successfully completing every major mission objective.
Data Will Help Future Missions
Skyroot said valuable flight data collected during Mission Aagaman will now be analysed to improve the performance of future Vikram rockets.
The company also confirmed that its next launch vehicle is already in the final stages of manufacturing, with another mission expected before the end of this year.
PM Modi Congratulates Skyroot Team
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Skyroot team after the successful mission. He recalled that when India first opened the space sector to private companies, many people had questioned the decision.
According to Skyroot officials, the Prime Minister told the team that the successful launch had proved those doubts wrong. He also sent a handwritten message carrying the words “Vande Mataram”, which was carried aboard the mission.
A New Era for India’s Space Programme
Mission Aagaman is being viewed as one of the biggest milestones for India’s commercial space sector. It not only demonstrates that Indian private companies can successfully build orbital rockets but also strengthens the country’s position in the global space industry.
With Vikram-1’s successful first flight, India has joined an elite group of nations capable of privately launching rockets into orbit, opening the door for more commercial missions, technological innovation and greater participation by Indian startups in the global space economy.
