Aam Aadmi Party leader Gopal Italia has strongly criticized Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Harish Khurana for sharing an alleged AI-generated photo falsely linking him to Rajesh Sakariya, the man accused of attacking Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Italia on Wednesday called Khurana “no better than a petty troll” for spreading misinformation.
In a video message, Italia questioned whether Khurana had considered the legacy of his late father, former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, before making such accusations.
Italia told Vibes of India that the BJP is doing such things as it has no other work to do. He further claimed that the attacker has nothing to do with the BJP.
He suggested that the BJP’s actions were driven by frustration following his recent by-election victory in Visavadar, Gujarat. “Since I won the Visavadar seat, the BJP has been unable to digest that someone from a non-political background, representing a new party like AAP, defeated them. They are now trying to malign me, AAP, and our leader Arvind Kejriwal out of sheer frustration,” he said.
He went on to accuse the BJP of repeatedly using underhanded tactics to defame political opponents. “We draw our strength from the people. The BJP continues to use disgraceful and dishonest methods to tarnish our image,” Italia added.
Directly addressing Khurana, Italia said, “You edited an old video of mine and inserted someone else’s photo to create a false narrative. Would your father, who earned respect through his integrity, be proud of this kind of behavior?”
Italia urged both the media and BJP leaders to verify information before amplifying baseless claims. “Stop running stories based on tweets from petty trolls. If this continues, I will be compelled to pursue legal action,” he warned.
The controversy began when Harish Khurana posted on social media alleging Italia’s connection to Sakariya. In response, Italia refuted the claim, stating the image was doctored using artificial intelligence. He also shared the original video to counter the misinformation.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have booked Sakariya under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempted murder. Authorities described Sakariya as a “serial offender,” noting his history of multiple cases in Gujarat, though many ended in acquittals.
