Billionaire Gautam Adani has welcomed a US court’s decision to dismiss criminal charges against him, saying his faith in truth, fairness and the rule of law remained strong throughout the legal battle.
The development comes after the US Justice Department decided to stop pursuing its fraud and bribery case against Adani. A US federal judge subsequently approved the request to dismiss the charges.
Adani said he accepted the court’s decision with “humility and deep respect for the judicial process” and thanked those who continued to place their trust in the Adani Group, the legal system and India’s ability to deliver justice.
US Court Approves Dismissal of Charges
US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis, based in Brooklyn, approved federal prosecutors’ request to drop the criminal case against Adani.
The Justice Department had decided that it would no longer pursue the prosecution, describing the case as primarily foreign, difficult to prove and inconsistent with its current priorities.
However, prosecutors could not simply withdraw the criminal charges on their own. The court’s approval was required before the case could be formally dismissed.
The judge had earlier sought additional explanations from the Justice Department about its decision.
Court Questioned Whether Any Deal Was Involved
The dismissal had come under additional scrutiny after Judge Garaufis questioned whether anything had been promised in exchange for dropping the case.
In a sworn declaration filed on July 15, Adani said he was not aware of any such agreement.
Adani had previously pledged to invest $10 billion in the United States. His legal team had told the Justice Department that the investment commitment “might be part of a resolution of these matters.”
However, Adani’s lawyer later said the Justice Department had made clear that the group’s willingness to invest in the US would not be considered as part of any resolution of the criminal case.
What Were the Original Allegations?
The criminal case was filed in 2024. US prosecutors had accused Adani of allegedly agreeing to bribe Indian government officials in order to obtain approvals for an Adani Group subsidiary to develop a solar energy project.
He was also accused of allegedly misleading US investors about the group’s anti-corruption practices.
The Adani Group has consistently denied wrongdoing.
Adani himself did not appear in a US court to respond to the charges.
Justice Department Decided to End Prosecution
The US Justice Department announced on May 18 that it would no longer pursue the prosecution.
The decision came during US President Donald Trump’s second term and followed other instances in which federal prosecutors sought to end high-profile white-collar criminal cases.
Because the charges were criminal in nature, the Justice Department needed approval from the federal court to formally close the case.
Adani Says Focus Remains on India and Long-Term Work
Following the court’s decision, Adani said the group would remain focused on its work rather than the legal battle.
He said the group’s commitment was to build for India, create long-term value and serve a purpose larger than itself.
Adani also ended his statement with “Jai Hind”, signalling his continued focus on the group’s activities and commitments in India.
The case had attracted considerable attention since the charges were unsealed in November 2024. Before that, Adani had pledged to invest $10 billion in the United States.
With the US court now approving the dismissal of the criminal charges, the legal proceedings against Adani in this case have been brought to an end.
