AFES Gives Safety Checklist to Coldplay Organisers

| Updated: January 22, 2025 14:49

Following the horrific fire incident at TRP Gaming Zone in Rajkot last year, which resulted in the loss of 27 lives, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is implementing comprehensive safety measures for the Coldplay concert at Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25-26. The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) is taking no chances and has supplied concert organisers with a detailed safety checklist.

With an anticipated crowd of 150,000 spectators likely to participate in the event, a high-ranking AFES official has given a checklist to the organisers, designed to lessen fire risks.

It presents a risk assessment framework to recognise, assess, and handle possible risks linked to overcrowding, electrical systems, pyrotechnics, combustible materials, cooking zones, smoking, temporary structures, and vehicle dangers.

AFES has directed the organisers to position 60 trained fire marshals at the location and to provide a fire safety audit report.

The checklist explains how to manage occupancy loads, including figuring out the stadium’s maximum safe capacity and making sure all exits are secure. There are instructions for calculating the occupant load based on certain occupancy variables and floor space.

It also specifies requirements for emergency exits, including minimum exit widths, the number of exits needed based on occupancy levels, and the farthest one can go to get to these exits. All evacuation routes and emergency exits must remain unobstructed, clearly marked with appropriate signage, and unobstructed. Adequate ABC-type fire extinguishers, fully operational fire hydrants, smoke and heat detection systems, and a reliable public address system for emergencies are all necessary, according to the checklist.

The official said that a special force has been designated to carry out checks to guarantee that safety protocols were properly enforced. Additionally, the checklist emphasises the importance of a specialised Fire Command Centre with cutting-edge monitoring and control equipment such as video surveillance technology, communication systems, AI-based crowd density analysis tools, large display screens, and backup systems to ensure both power and data reliability.
