Scarlett Johansson Confirms Black Widow’s MCU Exit

| Updated: March 12, 2025 17:03

Hollywood actor Scarlett Johansson has confirmed that her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character, Black Widow, is permanently dead, urging fans to accept the conclusion of Natasha Romanoff’s storyline.

Amid ongoing speculation about possible returns of popular characters through crossovers and alternate timelines, Johansson made it clear that Natasha’s story has ended.

Romanoff sacrificed herself in the 2019 film “Avengers: Endgame,” marking her character’s death. Although Johansson reprised her role in the 2021 prequel “Black Widow,” she stated that it would be her final appearance in the MCU.

“Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay? They (fans) just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let her go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment,” Johansson told in an interview.

The Oscar-nominated actor will next appear in “Jurassic World Rebirth,” a spin-off from the iconic film franchise. Speaking about promoting the upcoming release, Johansson revealed that Universal Pictures had recently approached her about joining Instagram to support the film’s publicity.

However, she declined the offer, expressing her discomfort with social media. “I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal, and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth?’ I get a lot of pressure to join social media. (It makes me think) Is there a way where I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could,” she said.

“The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient. So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine,” she added.

Jurassic World Rebirth,” which also stars Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, is scheduled for release in cinemas on July 2.
