Ahmedabad Crime Branch has cracked a sensational 2021 cold case murder from Raipur in Chhattisgarh, arresting a fugitive involved in a brutal contract-killing-turned-robbery case that had remained undetected for years. The crime was originally registered under the jurisdiction of Tikrapara Police Station in Raipur.
The case relates to the murder of Shakuntala Yadav, widow of Amar Yadav. She lived with her younger son Amit Yadav, while her elder son Ajay Yadav had been estranged from the family since 2017. Investigations revealed that the family was embroiled in a bitter dispute over property, which eventually led to a criminal conspiracy.
According to officials, Shakuntala and her younger son Amit allegedly approached Ajaykumar alias Laxmisagar alias Kimtishree Rajnarayan Mishra, who worked as a security guard at the same hospital as Amit in Raipur. Aware of his criminal background, they offered him Rs 4 lakh as a contract to eliminate the elder son Ajay Yadav and settle the dispute. An advance of Rs 1 lakh was paid, but the accused fled to his native village without carrying out the task.
Months later, Shakuntala and Amit tracked him down and demanded that he either complete the job or return the money. The accused reportedly assured them that he would carry out the killing, buying himself time.
Four months later, Ajaykumar Mishra, along with his associate Ketan alias K.T. Ramsundar Tiwari, went to Shakuntala’s residence in Raipur under the pretext of executing the contract. Upon reaching the house, they found that Amit was in jail in connection with another offence, leaving Shakuntala alone.
Police said the accused then altered their plan and decided to commit robbery instead. They stayed overnight at the house and the next morning strangled Shakuntala Yadav to death using a rope. After the murder, they looted around Rs 10 lakh in cash and 30 to 35 tolas of gold jewellery before fleeing the scene.
Following the crime, the accused sold the stolen gold to a trader in Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh. To evade arrest, he maintained complete digital silence, avoiding mobile phone usage and refraining from using identification documents such as PAN or Aadhaar cards. He frequently changed locations, moving from Goa to Ahmedabad in 2022, where he stayed in the Naroda area with his brother, and later shifting to Mumbai. He continued to move across cities under different identities to avoid detection.
Acting on technical intelligence inputs and sustained field surveillance, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch eventually tracked down and apprehended the accused, bringing an end to his nearly five-year-long evasion.
The arrested accused has been identified as Ajaykumar alias Laxmisagar alias Kimtishree Rajnarayan Mishra. His associate in the crime, Ketan alias K.T. Ramsundar Tiwari, is a resident of Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh.
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch is now coordinating with Raipur Police in Chhattisgarh for the formal transfer of custody and further legal proceedings in connection with the 2021 murder case.
