: The deaths of two children in Chandkheda have taken a more complex turn after forensic findings ruled out food poisoning, with investigators now closely examining the role of the parents amid emerging inconsistencies.
The victims — a three-month-old infant Raha and her four-year-old sister Mishri, children of Ravi and Hetal Panchal — were initially believed to have fallen ill after consuming dosa from a batter purhchased from a neighbourhood shop. However, the shop owner has proved that he sold the same batter to at least 300 other people and no one had food poisoning or any other complaints. Also, the police could not believe how a three month old could eat the dosa. However, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report found no toxic substances in either the batter or the children’s viscera, weakening the original theory. Now, a panel postmortem report could throw in fresh clues.
Suspicion has intensified because, despite the children testing negative for toxins, traces of toxic substances were reportedly found in the parents’ blood samples. Investigators say this mismatch raises critical questions about the source and timing of exposure.
Police are also examining discrepancies in the parents’ statements regarding what the family consumed and the sequence of events on the day of the incident. The fact that several others reportedly consumed the same batter without falling ill has further undermined the family’s initial account.
Investigators are also looking into a personal diary maintained by Hetal Panchal, which reportedly تشير to emotional distress and financial strain within the household. Sources say the family had been facing mounting financial difficulties, adding another dimension to the probe.
Officials have not ruled out foul play or the possibility of substances being introduced after the food was purchased. At this stage, no formal charges beyond the initial FIR have been confirmed.
Authorities have sent the forensic findings for a panel medical opinion to determine the precise cause of death. Depending on those conclusions, the probe may expand to include custodial questioning and further forensic analysis.
With conflicting evidence and unanswered questions, the case has shifted from a suspected food poisoning incident to a multi-layered investigation, with the parents’ role now a key focus. The police says they have found a diary which notes the mother’s penchant to have a male child and the father’s weak financial situation.
