Ahmedabad: Teen Cousins Renounce Worldly Life for Spiritual Path

| Updated: January 21, 2025 12:09

Two young cousins from Ahmedabad’s affluent Vohera family are set to renounce their worldly lives to pursue self-realisation and eternal happiness.

Tashvi, 13, and Nishvi, 16, will take diksha, a vow of monkhood, in a grand ceremony to be held on Sunday at Palitana under the aegis of Acharya Nityasensuri and Acharya Jayratnasuri. They will join seven others from Surat and Ahmedabad in this spiritual transition.

The Vohera family, renowned for its textile and pipe manufacturing businesses, will see its first members in 70 years take diksha. Their joint family of 37 resides in a three-storeyed bungalow in Navrangpura area of the city.

Both cousins have been deeply inspired by spirituality from a young age, attending derasars regularly and observing religious rituals.

Nishvi, a student of DAV School, and Tashvi, who studied at Gurukul in Sabarmati, have also travelled extensively, visiting countries such as the UAE, Singapore, Australia, and China (Hong Kong). Despite their exposure to global cultures, they have chosen to renounce material wealth.

Nishvi’s father, Ankit, shared how the decision took the family by surprise. “It was an event in the making in the third generation. Nishvi’s maternal grandmother and mother both wanted to take diksha, but circumstances did not allow it. We were surprised when she expressed her desire to become a sadhvi,” he said.

Tashvi’s father, Nikunj, explained the family’s initial reluctance. “When Tashvi expressed the same intent, we were not convinced. However, both cousins spent a year living in a gurukul, following the lifestyle and rituals of ascetics. Their strong resolve during this period convinced us they were ready.”

Speaking through their parents, Tashvi and Nishvi said they do not aspire to an affluent lifestyle. “This step will bring us knowledge, which will lead to the happiness we seek,” they said.

By taking diksha, they will transition from being part of a close-knit extended family to joining a spiritual family of hundreds of sadhvis in Gujarat.

The ceremony at Palitana marks a significant milestone for the Vohera family.
