India’s Independence Day celebrations this year will include a special tribute to the national song “Vande Mataram”, which will be sung from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort in New Delhi for the first time.
The special performance is part of the celebrations marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, a song that played an important role in inspiring people during India’s freedom struggle.
The announcement was made by Defence Secretary R K Singh, who said the song’s enduring legacy would be honoured during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
Vande Mataram to Be Sung From Red Fort
According to the announcement, Vande Mataram will be performed from the Red Fort after the Prime Minister’s arrival at the venue.
The national flag will then be unfurled, followed by the Prime Minister’s customary Independence Day address to the nation.
The decision to include Vande Mataram at the Red Fort is being seen as a tribute to the song’s historical role in India’s freedom movement.
The song inspired millions during the struggle for independence and became closely associated with the country’s nationalist movement.
Mi-17 Helicopter to Carry 150-Year Commemoration Banner
The celebrations will also feature a special aerial tribute to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram.
An Mi-17 helicopter of the Indian Air Force will carry a banner commemorating the 150th anniversary of the national song.
The helicopter will also shower flower petals over people gathered at the Red Fort, adding a ceremonial element to the Independence Day programme.
Military Bands to Pay Tribute
The celebrations will not be limited to the main ceremony at the Red Fort.
Several performances by military bands are also being organised as part of the tribute to Vande Mataram.
The performances are intended to highlight the patriotic significance of the song and its continuing place in India’s national celebrations.
Focus on Young India and Viksit Bharat
This year’s Independence Day programme will also highlight Yuva Shakti, or the strength and contribution of India’s young population.
The celebrations will recognise the role of young Indians in helping build a Viksit Bharat, or developed India, with the goal of achieving that vision by 2047, the centenary year of India’s independence.
The emphasis on youth is intended to connect the country’s history of freedom with its future ambitions.
