| Updated: February 2, 2024 20:26

An Indian-origin student identified as Shreyas Reddy Benigeri was found dead in Ohio, Cincinnati, US, the Indian mission confirmed.

“Deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of Mr Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, a student of Indian origin in Ohio. A police investigation is underway. At this stage, foul play is not suspected. The Consulate continues to remain in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance to them,” the Indian Mission in New York said.

This is the fourth instance of the death of an Indian and Indian-origin student in the US in the past one week.

Last month, 25-year-old Vivek Saini was hammered to death by a homeless man in a store. Saini had recently completed his MBA in the US. He was murdered by Julian Faulkner, a homeless drug addict that Saini had been helping out for a couple of days before the fatal attack.

Neel Acharya, an Indian student who was studying at Purdue University in Indiana state, was also found dead in the US last week. Acharya, a double major in computer science and data science at the John Martinson Honours College of Purdue University, was reported missing on social media on Sunday. His death was confirmed on Monday.

In November last year, 26-year-old Aaditya Adlakha, an Indian doctoral student at the University of Cincinnati, died after being shot inside a car in Ohio. Adlakha was a PhD student in the molecular and developmental biology programme.

In another case, Akul Dhawan, an 18-year-old Indian-origin freshman majoring in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois, was discovered dead in January. Dhawan was reported missing by his roommate when the temperature was a bone-chilling 1 degree Fahrenheit (-17 degrees Celsius). His body was found in Champaign, Illinois, very close to the university campus, and the autopsy indicated that changes in Dhawan’s skin were consistent with hypothermia.
