Bangladeshi National Arrested for Alleged Attack on Saif Ali Khan in Mumbai

| Updated: January 19, 2025 17:23

The Mumbai Police have arrested a Bangladeshi national in connection with an alleged burglary attempt and assault at actor Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence on Thursday. The accused, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was reportedly living in Mumbai for the past four months under the alias Bijoy Das after illegally entering India.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam confirmed the arrest and revealed details about the incident.

“The investigation has revealed that this accused could be from Bangladesh. He does not have any Indian documents. We suspect he is from Bangladesh, and we are investigating further. Passport Act charges have been added to the case against him,” Gedam said.

According to police, the intruder broke into Khan’s residence through a fire exit at the back of the property. His presence was first noticed by the nanny, Eliyama Philip, who was awakened by noises around 2 am. She initially believed Kareena Kapoor Khan might have been checking on their younger son, Jehangir, but realised something was wrong when she saw a man emerging from the bathroom and entering the child’s room.

Philip recounted her encounter with the intruder in her statement to the police. “The attacker put his finger to his mouth and said, ‘Don’t make any noise, nobody will go out’ in Hindi,” she said.

She attempted to protect Jehangir, but the intruder, armed with a wooden stick and a long Hexa blade, attacked her. “I tried to block the attack by putting my hand forward, but the blade hit me near the wrists of both my hands and on the middle finger of my left hand,” she said.

When confronted, the intruder demanded Rs 1 crore. Hearing Philip scream, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan rushed to the scene. As Khan questioned the man’s intentions, the intruder attacked him with the same weapon, stabbing him six times.

The family managed to escape to the upper floor of their home and secure themselves, while the attacker fled.

Saif Ali Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors confirmed he is recovering well.

Police later arrested the accused in Thane, recovering items that indicated his Bangladeshi origin. Gedam said, “He came to India illegally and was working at a housekeeping agency. We are interrogating him further.”

The incident has drawn widespread attention and raised concerns about security in Mumbai. In response to criticism over the city’s safety, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended Mumbai’s record, saying, “Among all the megacities in the country, Mumbai is the safest. It is true that some incidents take place, and they should be treated with seriousness, but to say Mumbai is unsafe based on one incident is not correct.”
