Justin Baldoni Files $400M Lawsuit Against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds Amid Legal Battle

| Updated: January 18, 2025 18:51

Actor and director Justin Baldoni has filed a $400 million (£326 million) lawsuit against actress Blake Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, escalating an ongoing legal dispute. This comes after Blake Lively filed a legal complaint in December accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and alleging he attempted to “destroy” her reputation.

The lawsuit, filed by Baldoni, accuses Lively and her team of civil extortion, defamation, and invasion of privacy, as reported by a section of the media. In addition to Lively and Reynolds, the case names their publicist, who has yet to comment on the situation.

Baldoni’s legal representatives have alleged that Lively and her team engaged in what they described as deceitful tactics to damage his career and personal life.

Bryan Freedman, Baldoni’s attorney, claimed that Lively’s team disseminated “grossly edited, unsubstantiated, new and doctored information to the media” to harm Baldoni’s reputation.

Freedman further stated, “They are attempting to bulldoze reputations and livelihoods for heinously selfish reasons.”

The conflict between the two stars reportedly began during the production of It Ends With Us, a film based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel about domestic abuse.

The movie, released in August, was a commercial success, earning over $350 million (£280 million) globally. However, tensions surfaced during the promotional campaign. The co-stars were not seen together on the red carpet at the film’s New York premiere, and Baldoni was notably absent from the London premiere.

In December, four months after the film’s release, Lively filed her legal complaint alleging sexual harassment and claiming a “hostile work environment” on set. She also accused Baldoni and his studio head of orchestrating an online campaign to damage her reputation.

Baldoni’s legal team has strongly denied these allegations, calling them “categorically false.” They also revealed that a crisis management team was hired after Lively allegedly threatened to sabotage the film unless her demands were met.

In a significant development, Baldoni’s lawyers have submitted a 179-page legal complaint, arguing that the case extends beyond media headlines and public disputes.

The filing states, “This is not a case about celebrities sniping at each other in the press. When plaintiffs have their day in court, the jury will recognize that even the most powerful celebrity cannot bend the truth to her will.”

Representatives for Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and their publicist have not responded to the allegations or Baldoni’s lawsuit at this time.
