Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has come under fire for her remarks about Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma.
In a now-deleted post on X, she criticised the cricketer’s physique and questioned his leadership abilities.
“@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!” Mohamed wrote.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia condemned her comments, calling them inappropriate, particularly as India prepares to face Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal in Dubai on Tuesday.
“It’s very unfortunate that this kind of remark for our captain (Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma) has come from a person who is on a responsible post, especially at a time when Team India is playing an ICC tournament and the team is all set to play the semi-final match,” Saikia told a news agency.
Rohit, 37, is leading India in the tournament, having guided the team to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Under his leadership, India won all three of their Group A matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand, making them the only team to secure a perfect record in the group stage.
The BJP also criticised Mohamed’s remarks. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took aim at Congress, highlighting its electoral losses.
“Those who have lost 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling the captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive! I guess 6 ducks in Delhi and 90 election losses is impressive but winning the T20 World Cup isn’t! Rohit has a brilliant track record as captain by the way!” Poonawalla said.
India will face Australia in the semifinal as they seek to reach the tournament’s final.
