“Shrimad Bhagavad Gita’s values, principles, and importance are accepted by people of all religions. In Class 6, the text will be introduced in such a way that students will develop an interest in it,” Gujarat’s Education Minister Jitu Vaghani stated in the Assembly on Thursday. The new directive is applicable to state and private run institutions.
The state government will incorporate the Gita into school curricula for classes 6 through 12 beginning the academic year 2022-23. Education minister Jitu Vaghani made the announcement during a discussion on budgetary allocations for the education department.
The decision comes in line with the Centre’s New Education Policy that recommends the introduction of modern and ancient culture, traditions and knowledge systems so that students feel proud of India’s rich and diverse culture, the minister added.
He said that the 700-verse long Hindu scripture should also be included in the prayer program. Various competitions and creative activities like shlokas, shloka songs, essays, debates, plays, quizzes, etc based on Bhagavad Gita should be organized in schools. Everything will be provided to the schools by the government, he added.
