Congress Posts Third ‘Zero’ In Delhi Polls 2025, But Sees Vote Share Increase

| Updated: February 9, 2025 14:21

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suffered a depressing setback in the Delhi Assembly elections, with its vote share dropping by nearly 10 percentage points. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), out of power in the national capital for over 26 years, made a strong resurgence, securing a substantial increase in its vote share and returning to power.

AAP’s vote share fell to 43.57 per cent from 53.57 per cent in the 2020 elections. In the 2015 assembly elections, it had secured 54.5 per cent of the votes. The party, which previously won massive mandates with 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020, was reduced to 22 seats this time.

The BJP secured a vote share of 45.56 per cent and won 48 seats. The party’s vote share had risen consistently from 32.3 per cent in 2015 to 38.51 per cent in 2020, reflecting a steady increase in support.

The Congress, which governed Delhi from 1998 to 2013, failed to win a single seat.

However, it recorded a marginal improvement in its vote share, rising to 6.34 per cent from 4.3 per cent in the 2020 elections, an increase of 2.1 percentage points. The party’s performance impacted its INDIA bloc ally, AAP, across multiple constituencies.

The election results signal a major shift in Delhi’s political landscape, with the BJP regaining control after more than two decades, while AAP suffered significant losses. The Congress, despite a slight recovery in vote share, remained unable to make electoral gains in the capital.
