A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Haridwar for allegedly posing as the personal secretary of International Cricket Council (ICC) President Jay Shah and staying at a luxury hotel under this false identity, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Amarinder Singh, from Ferozepur, Punjab, had been residing at the Udman Orchid hotel near ART Chowk in the Kharkhari area since March 5.
Singh introduced himself as Shah’s personal secretary and used this identity to avail of VIP treatment, free accommodation, and exclusive services at the hotel. He also conducted alleged meetings with several people at the premises.
Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Parmendra Singh Dobal stated that Singh’s behaviour and unusual demands raised suspicions among the hotel staff. Receptionist Vishal Pokhriyal lodged a complaint with the police after noting Singh’s questionable conduct and unrealistic requests.
Following the complaint, police visited the hotel and interrogated Singh. Upon investigation, it was revealed that his identity was fraudulent.
Authorities recovered a fake identity card of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which displayed photographs of both Singh and Jay Shah, along with other forged documents.
Singh was arrested on Monday and booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 319(2) (cheating by personation), 336(2) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable documents), and 340(2) (forgery of electronic record).
The police are also investigating whether Singh has a prior criminal record or if this was his first offence.
Further investigations are ongoing.
