Covid Upsurge Infected 80% of China’s Populace: Expert

A prominent Chinese government scientist stated on Saturday that there is little chance of a significant COVID-19 comeback in China during the next two to three months because 80% of the population is infected.

According to Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a second Covid wave is unlikely in the near future despite the fact that the pandemic may spread due to the large number of people travelling during the current Lunar New Year holiday period, boosting infections in some areas.

As a result of newly loosened Covid limits, hundreds of millions of Chinese are travelling across the nation for holiday reunions, raising concerns about new outbreaks in rural areas that are less prepared to handle significant outbreaks.

The National Health Commission official said that the number of Covid patients in China’s fever clinics, ERs, and with serious conditions has peaked. According to government statistics, about 60,000 Covid patients had died in hospitals as of January 12, or about a month after China abruptly ended its zero-Covid policy.

However, other authorities claimed that number likely grossly underestimates the real impact because it doesn’t include people who died at home and because many medical professionals have stated they are discouraged from listing Covid as a cause of death.
