COVID Vaccine Can’t Be Linked To Heart Failures, Claims Study

| Updated: September 4, 2023 19:10

Spikes in cardiac arrest deaths have been linked to surges of COVID-19 infection, but a recent study has contested this claim.

According to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, COVID vaccine is safe. Diabetics and smokers had higher odds of 30-day mortality, the study, reported by a national daily, claimed.

The report added that the study is based on a retrospective analysis of the case history of 1,578 heart attack patients who were admitted to G B Pant Hospital in Delhi between August 2021 and August 2022.

As many as 1,086 (69%) vaccinated people while 492 (31%) of the unvaccinated lot were considered for the study, conducted under the watch of Dr Mohit Gupta.

Among the vaccinated group, 1,047 (96%) received two doses of the vaccine while 39 (4%) had only a single dose. The researchers concluded that there was no clustering from heart attack post-vaccination.

Dr Gupta told the daily that of the 1,578 patients with a heart attack (Acute Myocardial Infarction), the 30-day all-cause mortality occurred in 201 (13%). Out of these, 116 (58%) belonged to the vaccinated group while 85 (42%) were non-vaccinated.

However, the GB Pant cardiologist claimed that when the incidence was adjusted against pre-existing risk factors in both groups, the odds of 30-day mortality were lower in the vaccinated population.

“Contrarily, increasing age, diabetics and smokers had higher odds of 30-day mortality,” he told the daily.

He added that the COVID-19 vaccine was not only safe but also had a protective effect in the reduction of all-cause mortality, both in short term and at six months of follow-up.
