In a shocking case, a man from Mehsana district secretly filmed his former girlfriend round the clock by installing a CCTV camera behind her house. The person has been booked for stalking and invading her privacy.
Senior officers of Mehsana police told a section of the media on Sunday that the complainant, an anganwadi employee in a village in Kadi taluka, was in a relationship with the accused for about 10 years. The relationship continued even after her marriage, but ended after her husband discovered their communication through messages and calls. The woman and her husband then met the man and asked him to end all contact, after which she stopped meeting him.
The accused is alleged to have continued to harass her, following her to her workplace, loitering near her home, and keeping track of her movements. One day, while cleaning the area behind their house, the couple found a small CCTV camera hidden inside a bush, Inspector S R Chaudhary of Bavlu police told media persons.
Suspecting foul play, her husband checked the device’s memory card. The footage allegedly showed the accused standing before the camera, which confirmed that he had installed it to monitor the woman’s daily activities.
The woman’s husband later submitted a complaint at Bavlu police station. The police registered a case thereafter.
Chaudhary further told the media that a preliminary inquiry has revealed that the accused may have gained access to another CCTV camera in the locality to keep surveillance on the woman’s movements.
Police said that such acts amount to serious privacy violations and cause mental distress to victims. The investigation is expected to include forensic analysis of the camera and memory card to determine the extent of surveillance and whether the footage was shared or stored elsewhere.
