Nearly a year after the devastating Ahmedabad Air India plane crash that killed 260 people and shook India’s aviation sector, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has said the final investigation report into the tragedy is expected within the next month.
Speaking after attending the India Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit 2.0 at GIFT City on Friday, Naidu said the inquiry led by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was now in its concluding phase.
“The investigation is progressing transparently and is now in the final stage. Since it involved an international flight, any country can scrutinise the report,” the minister said.
He added that the Centre had provided full technical and institutional support to investigators because of the international dimensions and complexity of the case.
The Crash That Shocked India
The crash took place on June 12, 2025, when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed seconds after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The aircraft rapidly lost altitude before crashing into the densely populated Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad, striking residential buildings and a hostel complex before erupting into a massive fireball visible across large parts of the city.
The disaster became one of the deadliest aviation accidents in India in recent decades. Official figures showed that 260 people died, including passengers, crew members and civilians on the ground.
Of the 242 people onboard, only one passenger survived.
The flight was carrying 230 passengers along with two pilots and 10 cabin crew members. The victims included citizens from multiple countries, reflecting the international nature of the London-bound flight.
Authorities confirmed that the dead included Indian nationals, British citizens, Portuguese nationals, Canadian citizens and several dual nationals, making the tragedy an international humanitarian and diplomatic issue as well.
Gujarat Lost Its Chief Minister
The crash acquired enormous political significance after it emerged that Bhupendra Patel was originally expected to travel on the same flight route later that week for official engagements linked to an investment and diaspora outreach programme in the United Kingdom.
While Patel was not onboard the ill-fated aircraft, the tragedy profoundly affected the Gujarat government because several senior bureaucrats, business delegates and individuals linked to official state programmes were among those who either died or were scheduled to travel on connected itineraries.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, there was widespread public discussion in Gujarat over how narrowly the state leadership had avoided an unprecedented constitutional and political crisis.
The crash also deeply traumatised Ahmedabad because many of the victims were local residents, students and families from Gujarat’s extensive NRI community with ties to Britain.
Boeing’s Role Under Intense Scrutiny
The accident placed renewed global scrutiny on Boeing, which was already facing worldwide criticism over safety and manufacturing concerns linked to multiple aircraft programmes.
Although the Boeing 787 Dreamliner had historically maintained a strong safety record, investigators began closely examining whether technical or manufacturing defects could have contributed to the Ahmedabad crash.
Teams from Boeing, engine manufacturers, international aviation regulators and foreign accident investigation agencies joined the probe alongside Indian authorities.
Investigators reportedly focused on several key possibilities, including sudden engine thrust loss, electrical system malfunction, fuel system failure, software anomalies and cockpit automation issues during the crucial take-off phase.
Preliminary findings released months earlier indicated the aircraft may have experienced an abrupt loss of thrust shortly after becoming airborne — one of the most dangerous scenarios possible during take-off.
The role of Boeing became especially sensitive because the company had already faced global pressure after previous controversies involving the 737 MAX programme, manufacturing quality concerns and whistleblower allegations about production standards.
The Ahmedabad crash therefore intensified debate internationally over aircraft certification systems, maintenance oversight and whether global aviation regulators had become overly dependent on manufacturer self-reporting mechanisms.
Speculation, Theories and Public Debate
The absence of a final report for several months fuelled intense public speculation about the cause of the crash.
Various theories circulated in aviation circles, media discussions and online forums — ranging from catastrophic dual-engine failure and bird strike scenarios to possible fuel contamination, software malfunction or pilot response complications and deliberate suicide by one of the pilots theory.
Some speculative narratives even attempted to link the crash to sabotage or cyber interference, though investigators never publicly indicated evidence supporting such claims.
Aviation experts repeatedly cautioned against premature conclusions, noting that modern aircraft accident investigations are highly technical and often require months of forensic reconstruction, simulation analysis and international coordination.
The AAIB reportedly analysed cockpit voice recordings, flight data recorders, maintenance logs, radar data, communication transcripts and wreckage patterns to reconstruct the aircraft’s final seconds.
Regulatory and Government Response
Following the crash, Indian aviation authorities ordered enhanced inspections and safety audits of Boeing 787 aircraft operating in India. Airlines were instructed to carry out additional technical checks involving engines, avionics and flight-control systems.
The Centre also established a high-level review mechanism to examine broader aviation safety standards, emergency response systems and regulatory oversight.
Naidu said the government continues to monitor compensation and support for affected families.
“We are monitoring the situation and ensuring that compensation procedures are prioritised. We are also asking the airline to coordinate closely with passengers and families,” he said.
The crash triggered large-scale insurance claims, compensation proceedings and international legal consultations involving victims’ families from several countries.
Final Report Expected to Answer Key Questions
The final AAIB report is expected to determine whether the disaster resulted primarily from mechanical failure, operational error, maintenance shortcomings or a combination of factors.
The findings are likely to have major implications not only for Indian aviation policy but also for global discussions around aircraft safety oversight, airline maintenance standards and Boeing’s manufacturing systems.
Because the accident involved an international flight, foreign nationals and one of the world’s most widely used long-haul aircraft Boeing model, the report is expected to be studied closely by aviation regulators and airlines across the world.
