Five Police Horses Die In Gujarat In One Month, 28 Infected; DGP Orders Probe

| Updated: July 17, 2024 17:13

A police inspector has been suspended after it came to light that five horses died in a month and 28 got infected with ticks at Ghoda Camp. DGP GS Malik has also ordered an inquiry into it.
The revelation came during Malik’s surprised visit to Meghaninagar Ghoda Camp that houses a police stable. During the visit, he learnt that three horses: Makdi (5 yrs), Radha (4 yrs) and Jaguar (6 yrs), who were drastically young compared to their two other dead mates, had died in June in a span of four weeks.
The suspicious nature of the deaths immediately alarmed DGP Malik as he ordered a special inquiry to look into the causes of the deaths. The inquiry confirmed that the deaths were due to infection and insect bites. Two horses had died under similar circumstances last year.
It was also established that lack of proper care had caused tick infection in 28. Following the inquiry report, PI MS Barot of Ghoda Camp was suspended with immediate effect.
The inquiry showed that horse fodder which is supposed to be dry and white was found to be muddy and green and stored in unkempt places where even lizards were noticed. Masses of algae were also found in the drinking water tanks used for horses.
Additionally, it was made known that the monthly medical check-ups done on horses which were mandatory were never performed for the horses that had died in June. Even the staff washrooms were found to be choked up and dirty, according to official police sources.
