|Gujarat | Updated: September 13, 2022 13:11

A 21-year-old man from Gujarat’s industrial town of Vapi was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room because of his online gambling debt.

According to the sources, Prabhat Sharma, a resident of Deepmala apartments in Valsad’s Vapi area died of suicide in his hotel room on Sunday evening, September 11, 2022.

Chandkheda police recovered a suicide note explaining the reason of his death.

A police officer stated that Prabhat was brilliant in his studies and had scored above distinction in his 10th and 12th board exam. Besides, he had also scored high in the first semester of his engineering course.

It was reported that the 21-year-old Prabhat began playing online games and gradually got into the habit of online gambling.

Lately, he talked about his habit to his mother and had apparently stated his condition of losing over his focus on his studies because of his newly-developed addiction.

Explaining about his financial conditions, Sharma mentioned that he had borrowed money from many people and had requested his father to pay off his debts.

Addressing his father, Prabhat stated in his note- “If someone comes and asks for money, please pay them.”

Sources said that he had blocked his father’s mobile number along with many other numbers after he returned from home. He fell into depression.

Only after his father called his classmates and inquired about him, he came to know about Prabhat’s condition.

On Sunday evening, his classmates found him hanging in his hostel room.

There is absolutely no central law that can regulate online gambling in India. Only two states in India have enacted legislation regarding online gambling- ‘Sikkim and Nagaland’. The Sikkim Online Gaming (Regulation) Act, 2008 is the first legislation to be enacted to regulate online gambling.
