Gujarat: AMC Renames MET Medical College As Narendra Modi Ahead Of PM’s Birthday

| Updated: September 16, 2022 09:44

After renaming Motera’s Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad as Narendra Modi Stadium, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has approved to rename its AMC MET medical college after Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his birthday, which is falling on September 17.

The new name was suggested by the AMC standing committee. A proposal in this regard was put forward to the committee in a meeting today.

AMC MET College is run by AMC Medical Education Trust at the LG hospital compound in Maninagar. It was the assembly constituency of the then chief minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.

Hitesh Barot, Standing Committee Chairman at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said, “The meeting of AMC Medical Education Trust was held today, where a proposal of renaming Maninagar based AMC MET medical college on the name of PM Modi was initiated.”

He added, “PM Modi had represented Maninagar constituency as a candidate for the assembly elections in the past.  The college was also constructed during his time. Therefore, we have approved to name the college as Narendra Modi Medical College.”

Meanwhile, the leader of the Opposition, Shahzad Khan said, “Gujarat’s Vidhan Sabha elections are due to be held in December. BJP has started renaming the cities and places in the wake of the elections. These changes of names are being done just to please one person. Congress opposes such moves and these kinds of initiatives will not improve any situation further. Instead of improving the condition of the patients at LG Hospital in Maninagar, the officials are more concerned regarding changing the names of the colleges.”

Considering the increasing number of patients at Maninagar’s LG Hospital, run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the then Chief Minister and now the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi had established a medical college in that area. The premises were inaugurated by Narendra Modi himself.

Of its 170 seats, the medical college currently offers postgraduate medical courses.

Earlier, the executive meeting of AMC was held on September 14,2022 in which a decision to rename the medical college as Narendra Modi Medical College was unanimously undertaken.

The proposal got its acceptance from the standing committee today.
