One family’s grief became seven families’ miracle. A Gujarat family has turned a personal tragedy into a life-giving act for strangers.
The world of Manubhai Parmar’s family collapsed when he met with a road accident on April 12.
The head injury was so severe that doctors couldn’t restore him to health, however hard they tried. He was eventually declared brain-dead.
In their darkest moment, his wife Arkhaben and other members of his family faced an unexpected question.
Hospital authorities counselled them about organ donation.
After much deliberation, the family consented. They donated his heart, liver, kidneys, eyes, and skin.
That decision reportedly gave seven people another chance at life.
The organs were carefully allocated. His liver and kidneys were transplanted at the Kidney Hospital on the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital campus. His heart travelled to CIMS Hospital. His eyes went to M&J Eye Hospital. His skin was preserved at the Civil Hospital’s skin bank.
The family’s gesture moved Dr Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. He said that the family’s humanity in their most painful hour gave new life to the seven people they didn’t even know.
Organ donation awareness is growing, he added. Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has reportedly facilitated donations from 234 brain-dead patients. Courtesy of this drive, 774 organs were donated in all, including 431 kidneys, 208 livers, 74 hearts, and 34 lungs.
Manubhai may be gone. But in seven people, something of him lives on.
Public awareness around organ donation is growing. Since the Aadhaar-linked NOTTO pledge portal went live in 2023, more than 3.30 lakh citizens have voluntarily committed to donating their organs.
Until two years ago, India ranked third in organ transplants after the US and China.
