Gujarat High Court Takes Special Measures To Prevent Spread Of COVID

| Updated: January 5, 2022 21:49

The Gujarat High Court is taking special measures to contain the manifold increase in cases of COVID in recent weeks. Entry to court rooms has been restricted and all gates except gate number 5 have been closed. The court canteen has been closed and only lawyers are being permitted to enter the courts.
It is worth recalling that physical hearings resumed only on August 19. Due to the pandemic, the High Court was only holding virtual hearings for 17 months.
At the same time, subordinate courts in Ahmedabad have been asked to step up vigilance.
During a hearing in the High Court, it came to the notice of the bench of the Chief Justice that two government officials were present in the courtroom. The Chief Justice remarked, “Officers have to travel a lot and only lawyers are allowed to enter the court, so why did they come here?” If the officer is asymptomatic, he may not even know that he is infected and that you may be infected. Why call an officer to the courtroom? ‘’
Following the court’s statement, the public prosecutor apologized to the court and assured the bench that vigilance would be maintained.
The City Civil and Sessions Court of Ahmedabad has issued important instructions to keep a close watch. The parties have been asked not to appear in court except in unavoidable circumstances. The parties and the lawyers have been requested to drop the documents related to the case in drop-box.
Advocates from Ahmedabad Bar Association and Small Court Bar Association have been apprised of the current situation.
Movement of people in the court premises is also increasing. Until January 20, both parties and the lawyers have been instructed to proceed with the case only with the consent of the lawyer, not to prosecute in the absence of a lawyer and not to issue ex parte orders. Witnesses have also been asked not to insist on being called to court.
