While Gujarat continues to attract students from across the globe for its flourishing higher education sector, the recent case of M.K. University in Patan is raising serious concerns. Despite having received recognition from both the state and central governments, as well as the University Grants Commission (UGC), the university’s legitimacy is now being questioned.
According to sources and reports in a section of the media, the university’s administration building is in a state of disrepair, while its actual location in Hanumanpura seems more fitting for an agricultural farm than an academic institution. The area, where a signboard for M.K. University is displayed, houses what appears to be a warehouse for agricultural produce and there is no sign of any academic activity taking place.
The UGC’s official documents list Hanumanpura as the university’s address, but upon further inspection, the location does not to comply with the necessary regulations for a recognised educational institution. This has led to allegations that M.K. University is just a ghost building, operating solely on paper.
Patan MLA Kirit Patel has alleged that the University was sold to Jitendra Yadav, the owner of Sunrise University in Rajasthan. He has urged the Education Minister Rushikesh Patel to initiate a CID inquiry.
Yadav, currently detained in a Rajasthan prison for his alleged involvement in a fake degree scam, is said to have taken control of M.K. University despite its apparent lack of academic operations.
In addition to the absence of students, the Matarwadi building in Hanumanpura, which is supposed to house M.K. University, is devoid of both faculty and staff.
