Despite relief from scorching sun, Gujarat is still two weeks away from monsoon. Pre-monsoon respite in the form of an overcast sky might have triggered hopes of an early onset, but the weatherman sticks to the usual June 20-June 25 monsoon inaugural in the state.
However, the good news is that Gujarat will receive a bountiful monsoon. The met predicts a 103% rainfall in the country this season. Meanwhile, heat-wave conditions in the state are likely to persist till June 7, after which, the clouds take over.
According to met director Manorama Mohanty, monsoon has started its activity in Kerala and is headed towards Karnataka. “Information about Gujarat will be calculated only after the buildup reaches Maharashtra. What Gujarat is now experiencing is the gust of westerly winds. Rain system is yet to form over Gujarat,” read the circular on the official website.
In India, monsoon or rainy season, lasts from June to September. The season is dominated by the humid southwest summer monsoon, which slowly sweeps across the country beginning late May or early June. Monsoon rains begin to recede from north India at the beginning of October. South India typically receives more rainfall.
