| Updated: March 27, 2024 13:59

A recent analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat have shown exemplary commitment to their parliamentary duties over the past five years. However, when it comes to raising questions in the parliament, they rank 10th among all Indian states.

The ADR’s analysis of parliamentary work data shows that MPs from Gujarat, along with those from Chhattisgarh, attended an average of 216 days out of 273 sessions, leading the pack. These states were closely followed by Assam (215 days) and Kerala (214 days). Notably, eight MPs from Gujarat had an attendance record of more than 90%.

Despite their high attendance, Gujarat MPs lagged in terms of questioning. On average, MPs from Maharashtra and Kerala asked 315 and 236 questions respectively, compared to 168 questions raised by MPs from Gujarat.

In total, the 26 MPs from Gujarat asked 4,371 questions in Parliament. Naran Kacchadia from Amreli was the most active, raising 434 queries. He was followed by Mohan Kundariya from Rajkot (342 questions) and Parbat Patel from Banaskantha (323 questions).

The 17th Lok Sabha worked for 273 days across 15 sessions, with the first session being the longest at 37 days and the 13th session the shortest at just four days. The top five topics on which questions were raised included health and family welfare, agriculture and farmers welfare, railways, finance and education.
