| Updated: April 23, 2023 18:29

Two sanitation workers, identified as Gopal Padhar (24) and Bijal Padhar (32), died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sewage line in Dholka town, Ahmedabad district, on Saturday evening. The police reported the incident on Sunday.

According to the authorities, the workers fell unconscious after entering the sewage line to clean it. They were rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared them dead upon arrival.

“The incident occurred at around 5 pm on Saturday when the duo entered the gutter line. They died of asphyxiation,” said an official from Dholka police station.

The contractors Ashish Thakor and Jagdish Thakor have been registered under Indian Penal Code Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) as well as under relevant provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the official added.

The Gujarat government recently revealed to the legislative assembly that 11 sanitation workers have died of asphyxiation while cleaning drains in different parts of the state during the past two years.
