During a hearing on the petitions filed by the Gyanvapi Masjid committee in the Kashi Vishwanath temple-Gyanvapi Masjid case on Thursday, the Supreme Court stated that it would wait for the Varanasi District Court’s decision on the maintainability of the suit.
The Top court has adjourned the hearing of the case to the first week of October.
A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and PS Narasimha also refused to hear a new petition to offer water to the ‘Shivling,’ which is said to be found in the Gyanvapi mosque.
The bench ruled that such requests cannot be granted while the case is still pending. According to the petition, since the month of ‘Shravana’ is starting, Hindus should be allowed to perform puja and exercise their right.
It also turned down a plea filed by seven women for carbon dating and ground penetrating radar survey of the discovered Shivling within the Gyanvapi Mosque.
The bench was hearing an appeal filed by the Committee that manages the Gyanvapi mosque challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court allowing a court-appointed commissioner to inspect, survey, and videography the Gyanvapi mosque, where Hindus and Muslims have claimed the right to worship.
