A couple was stabbed to death in broad daylight by the woman’s father and brother. The ghastly act is stated to be an instance of honor killing as the girl’s family opposed her marriage of choice. Both belonged to the same community and have been identified as Anil Mahida (26), a resident of Khirasara village and Reena (20).
Rajkot’s Upleta town is still to recover from the horrific incident. Reportedly, around 11 am Tuesday, the couple was on a bike near Jikariya mosque in Kumbharvada. The woman’s father and brother arrived in a mini-truck and intercepted the bike. Thereon, as eyewitnesses recounted, the accused, Somji Singrakhiya and his son, Sunil, stabbed the couple several times. The culprits fled the scene leaving the duo to bleed to death.
Panicked eyewitnesses called the police and ambulance. However, the couple died shortly, even before either the police or medical team arrived. According to sub-inspector Gajendrasinh Zala, in-charge, Upleta PS, a hunt has been initiated for the accused. “Preliminary investigation confirms that the couple got married six months ago against the woman’s family,” he added.
