Police in Velachery, Tamil Nadu, reported on Sunday that a PhD student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, committed suicide in his room. The deceased has been identified as a 32-year-old Sachin Kumar Jain, a native of West Bengal. This is the 11th suicide incident since 2018, and the third reported from IIT Madras this year.
On Friday, the deceased posted a WhatsApp status: “I am sorry not good Enough.” According to the police, upon seeing the status, the deceased’s roommates rushed to Sachin’s room, only to find him hanging. Jain attended regular classes at the mechanical engineering department of IIT Madras’s Guindy campus in the morning
“An ambulance was called and he was pronounced dead on examination. Further investigation is underway,” the police added.
The body has been sent to Royapet Government Hospital for autopsy. Meanwhile, IIT Madras issued a statement expressing deep condolences over the student’s death.
“The institute expresses its heartfelt condolences and shares the grief of the friends and family of the deceased student. The Institute requests everyone respect the privacy of the student’s family at this difficult juncture. May the departed soul rest in peace”, read the note.
In the first instance, a second-year MS student of electronics engineering hung himself on February 13. Barely a month later, on March 14, a 20-year-old third-year BTech student from Andhra Pradesh died by suicide at the Madras Campus.
