Even though IIT offers big placements by top recruiters, about 10-20% of students at the elite institutes fail to receive campus placement every year. The number of students failing to receive placement only worsened due to nationwide lockdowns in the early 2020.
However, with a rapid increase in digitisation and a revival in hiring sentiment, the placement numbers have again increased. The class has not only received the highest number of offers yet , but has also seen a 15-25% surge in the number of students getting placed compared with the pandemic-hit previous batch.
Despite the batch size increasing by 15 % compared with two years ago, IIT Bombay still saw a 25% increase in the total number of students getting placed in the class of 2022. Compared to 61% placement the year before, IIT Madras saw as many as 80% of students who opted for campus placements during 2021-22 receiving job offers.
At IIT Roorkee, the numbers went up to 86.5% compared to 65.3% in 2020-21 and as for IIT Guwahati, it rose to 76% from 61.7% in the previous year.
In IIT BHU, 80.9% of the students who applied for placements got jobs, compared to 58.5% of the previous year. In IIT Delhi, the number spiked to 82% , from 79.6% in the previous year.
An anonymous placement head at an IIT said that no IIT has ever had a 100% placement rate, but this year has been relatively great.
