IMA Writes To NBEMS, Urges Uniform Internships In India

| Updated: January 10, 2023 12:01

Indian Medical Association (IMA) raised the problem of 850 MBBS students from Gujarat who are likely to miss the chance to appear in NEET-PG in a letter to the National Board of Examination in Medical Science (NBEMS).

Since they won’t be able to fulfil the requirements of a one-year internship as of March 31, 2023, as required by NBEMS, thousands of students from all over India won’t be eligible to participate in NEET-PG. The NEET-PG is scheduled for March 5.

In a letter to NBEMS, Dr Anil Nayak, the honorary Secretary General of the IMA and Dean of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University (HNGU), emphasises the necessity of coordinating admissions across all medical schools and colleges in India in order to avoid such errors.

The BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad and five other medical institutions in Gujarat will each have about 850 students who are not qualified to take the entrance exam. On April 10, 2023, BJ students will have finished their 12-month internship requirement; students from three medical colleges will have finished it on April 25, 2023.

Although the necessary internship must be completed before the deadline in order to meet NBE criteria, students sometimes struggle to do so because of unforeseen circumstances. The IMA letter said, “These students will miss their opportunity to seek postgraduate education as the internship schedules vary across the country.

“While we are entrusted with the task to bring uniformity in postgraduate examinations conducted in India, we must safeguard these basic objectives while framing the schedule for NEET PG. The well-being and welfare of students should be our primary and only focus,” it further stated.
