Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the Southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala sooner than expected. The anticipated date for the onset was June 1, but it arrived three days earlier.
What is Onset?
Kerala’s Southwest monsoon onset heralds the beginning of the four-month (June – September) monsoon season in India. This onset brings about 70% of the annual rainfall of the country. Every year IMD puts out its report based on defined parameters.
Based on IMD ’s reports, the following years when the monsoon onset arrived early are 2010, 2017, 2018, and 2022. After considering all the parameters, the department confirmed the development of clouds over the Arabian Sea and Kerala. However, the Andaman Sea did see an early arrival of monsoon onset on May 16, but the department said that later there had been a slowdown in monsoon progress.
Heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala’s coastal regions over the upcoming days. A warning has been issued to the fishermen not to go into the sea on May 29 and 30.
