Ladakh, a strategically important region bordering China, is set to elect Mohmad Haneefa Jan, an independent candidate, in the Lok Sabha elections, 2024. In the 2019 elections, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the BJP won the seat by securing 33.94% of the votes.
In the election of 2024, Advocate Mohmad Haneefa Jan, the independent candidate, is quite well-placed to have an edge over candidates from two national parties, the BJP and Congress.
Haneefa is likely to consolidate the Shia votes, whereas, BJP candidate Tashi Gyalson and Congress candidate Tsering Namgyal will see a split in Buddhist votes, offering an obvious benefit to Haneefa Jan.
Ladakh has 1,84,268 voters. which are split between Buddhists and Shia Muslims equally. The vast and sparsely populated Ladakh constituency spans an area of 173.266 sq km.
