Following the terror attacks in Pahalgam, which were reportedly linked to elements within Pakistan, a sequence of retaliatory actions from India was only expected.
And now, in a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), India has restricted its airspace to all aircraft registered, operated, or leased by Pakistan, including commercial airlines and military flights, a decision that further heightens the military tension and diplomatic breakdown between the two nations. Pakistani airlines will have to reroute their flights through longer, more circuitous routes over countries like China and Sri Lanka to reach Southeast Asia, such as Kuala Lumpur.
The airspace closure will be in effect from April 30 to May 23, 2025, according to reports.
India has already suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, demanding Pakistan halt its support for cross-border terrorism as a precondition for any revival. The Integrated Check Post at the Attari-Wagah border has also been closed, with a strict deadline for Pakistani nationals to leave India. All visas for Pakistani citizens have been revoked, and travel under the SAARC visa exemption scheme has been suspended.
Pakistan has enforced its own measures, including closing the Wagah border, suspending all SAARC visas for Indian nationals, and prohibiting Indian airlines from using its airspace. Pakistan has also invoked the Simla Agreement, declaring it will suspend all bilateral agreements unless India adheres to international law and UN resolutions on Kashmir.
