IPL 2022: MS Dhoni Hands Over CSK Captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja

| Updated: March 24, 2022 19:29

The veteran keeper-batsman MS Dhoni, who has led the Chennai Super Kings since 2008, has stepped down as captain and handed over the captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the commencement of IPL 2022.

“MS Dhoni has opted to hand over the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings to Ravindra Jadeja.”

Official statement from the team read “Jadeja, who has been with the Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will be only the third player to captain CSK,”.

“Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,” the franchise added.

In his 12 seasons as captain, Dhoni has guided CSK to four titles (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021), as well as two now-defunct Champions League T20 titles (2010 and 2014). CSK established themselves as the league’s most consistent franchise under Dhoni, qualifying for the play-offs in all but one season. He has led CSK to a league-record ten finals appearances.

Jadeja has done wonders with the bat as well as the ball for CSK over the years and is also one of the finest fielders in the IPL. As a batter, he has scored 2,386 runs in 63 innings, at an average of 27.11. He has also picked up 127 wickets in a total of 200 league matches.

Notably, throughout the last 14 years, Jadeja has been connected with four IPL franchises. He played for the Rajasthan Royals from 2008 to 2009, was acquired by the Kochi Tuskers in 2011, was with CSK from 2012 to 2015, transferred to Gujarat Lions in 2016, and returned to the Super Kings in 2018.

Jadeja was one of the four players retained by CSK ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction including Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali. In the 2012 IPL player auction, Jadeja was bought by Chennai Super Kings for approx. Rs. 9.8 Crore, making him the most expensive player of the year’s auction. In IPL 2022 mega auction, Jadeja was CSK’s most expensive retention at 16 crores.
