The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with immediate effect for a week following escalating military tension between India and Pakistan.
An announcement to this effect has been made by the BCCI on Friday after an emergency meeting held with the tournament officials. The safety of players, support staff and fans was cited as the reason.
On Thursday, the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharmashala was suspended midway. This was done following alerts of air raids in Jammu and Pathankot. First the floodlights were switched off and then the players requested the fans to go home.
The BCCI has arranged for a special train for the players to reach New Delhi.
Board secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement that new schedule and venues will be announced in a due course after consultation with relevant authorities.
A senior BCCI official is reported to have told media that that it does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war.
Each of the 10 teams were slated to play 14 league matches. Majority of them had played 11 so far and a couple of teams had played 12 matches. The final was scheduled to be played in Kolkata on May 25.
