Is Black Coffee A Medicine We Often Ignore?

| Updated: February 23, 2024 18:21

Coffee. Our go-to companion that gives us that so-needed rush of energy. A coffee break, like a siesta, does wonders. It restores our creative spark and, in general, reboots us from reverie.

But this mood-enhancer also divides opinion. It’s said coffee increases heart rate and causes insomnia, anxiety and muscle tremors.

Medical practitioners, however, point to more medical benefits, especially from black coffee.

“Black coffee – at least three cups a day, without sugar, without milk improves your liver function parameters – that is it reduces liver problems like non-alcoholic fatty liver, it reduces progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver to chronic liver disease. It also reduces the risk of liver cancer,” Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, a renowned hepatologist, said in an interview on Instagram, which was published by the Times Now news website.

“Contrary to what people think, it causes stomach ulcers, it raises your blood pressure, it causes reflux disease, it doesn’t do any of that. So, all of that may have some other reasons behind it, but coffee has been shown not to cause any of this, so it is safe to consume,” he said.

He added that coffee also guards against liver cancer and cirrhosis, a kind of late-stage chronic liver disease characterised by fibrosis, which leads to scarring and, finally, death of liver tissue.

Potential health benefits of black coffee:

  • Reduces risk of cancer
  • Protects against neurodegenerative conditions
  • Promotes alertness
  • Protects against progression of Parkinson’s disease
  • Reduces risk of diabetes
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Boosts metabolic rate
  • Helps reduce fat
