What If Urdu Vanishes From Hindi Cinema?

| Updated: October 21, 2021 14:57

Humour, they say is the best weapon when everything else fails to bring home the point. The Twitter handle Ishq Urdu, which as per its bio is a “space (which) celebrates the beauty of Urdu while making it relevant for contemporary readers,” has taken a sarcastic dig at the New India culture-police opposing Urdu by removing Urdu from several iconic cultural references. One has to concede, it makes one aware, how little a common man cares about the etymology of a word if his or her communication of feeling is understood by the receiver.

Debutants Aamir Khan- Juhi Chawla starrer “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” was one movie that reversed the trend of gory action films and brought back the melody in Bollywood music. The poster of this Romeo-Juliet a l’indienne is reproduced as below.

Karan Johar’s last directorial venture and famous for Arijit Singh’s soulful rendition of heartbreak songs, Ae Dil hai Mushkil’s poster is redesigned as below.

Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster Saudagar which pitted the great Dilip Kumar and stylish Raj Kumar against each other would be Vyapari in New India whereas Amitabh Bachchan’s one time comeback movie, Shahenshah would be Samraat .

In the same vein, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s critically acclaimed “Khamoshi” would be “ Maun” and Shahrukh Khan starrer “ Rais”, “Dhanwan”.

@Ishq_Urdu goes further and has evergreen songs from Bollywood remastered as per new diktats, so to say. Raj Kapoor’s world class heartbreak song penned by Shailendra “ Dost Dost Na Raha, Pyar Pyar Na Raha” becomes “ Mitr Mitr Na Raha, Pem Prem Na Raha”.

Muzaffar Ali’s Umraojan, made alive on screen by unforgettable Rekha with gems of poetry like “ Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Aap Meri Jaan Lijiye” sung by Asha Bhonsle and set to music by Khayyam becomes “ Hriday Vastu Kya Hai, Aap Mera Jeevan Lijiye”

What if Shekhar Kapoor created Amrish Puri’s Mogambo  choses to be “prasann” instead of “khush”? and how does it sound Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon gyrating on “ Tu Vastu Badi Hai Anandmayi Anandmayi” instead of “ Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast”?

The tweeter handle also posted reworked dialogues of Hindi films which have become household usage and becoming an undeniable part of the pop culture, by removing it’s urdu content.

Now BJP MP Sunny Deol’s courtroom yelling  “ Taarikh Pe Taarikh” is “ Dinaank Par Dinank”.

Amitabh’s baritone would sound different in “ Sambhandh se to hum tumhare pita lagte hain” form his Shahenshah dialogue.
