Days after the Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged role of JD(S) MP and its Hassan candidate Prajwal Revanna in a sex abuse case, the party suspended him.
His father HD Revanna, Holenarasipura MLA, and son of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda has also been named an accused in the case.
Post a core committee meeting at Hubballi on Tuesday, the Janata Dal (Secular), suspended Revanna, days after him and his father, JD(S) leader HD Revanna, were booked in an alleged sexual abuse case. JD(S) core committee president G T Deve Gowda said, “We have recommended suspension to JD(S) national president HD Deve Gowda. We have requested him to suspend him immediately.”
Party state president HD Kumaraswamy said the MP had been suspended until the completion of the investigation against him. “The duration of suspension is till SIT probe is completed. If his role is prove, then he will be suspended permanently,” he added.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also sought a report within three days from the Karnataka police over allegations of sexual abuse involving Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna.
In a letter to Karnataka DGP, the NCW drew attention to this matter following the circulation of several explicit video clips on social media platforms depicting Revanna allegedly engaged in acts of sexual abuse against multiple women.
The commission urged prompt and decisive action to apprehend the accused, who is reported to have fled the country.
It also emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and dignity of women and preventing the perpetuation of a culture that fosters disrespect and violence against them.
Meanwhile, party chief HD Kumaraswamy said,”There is a conspiracy to spoil our family name using the issue. Their objective is not to protect woman. Using this case, by raking HD Deve Gowda’s name and Kumaraswamy’s name repeatedly… What is the connection with Deve Gowda and me? In social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being tagged. What is the connection between the PM and this case? What is his role?”
Addressing a press conference on the alleged sexual assault allegations against Prajwal Revanna, party chief HD Kumaraswamy said, “When the issue came out, I said publicly that whoever committed the mistake will have to face the consequences. I have assured that we will not hinder with the investigation. I urge the women, that if they were forced, I ask them to appear before SIT and issue statement. Who released the pen drive? Congress leaders say that women were insulted. Many Congress workers have protested. Who provoked them? Did the public protest? Did the family of the victims protest?”
