Massive Protests at Delhi’s Jama Masjid After Friday Prayers

| Updated: June 10, 2022 14:23

The Nupur Sharma Hate Slander seems to be brewing into a storm. This Friday, June 10, being the first after the Kanpur clashes last week, Delhi’s Jama Masjid witnessed a huge protest demanding arrest of the ex-BJP leader.

Amid slogans of Allah-O-Akbar, namaazis who gathered after the Friday prayers held placards and banners demanding immediate arrest of Ms Sharma. The Nagpur-based leader is facing the wrath of the Muslim world with the Gulf countries having made no bones about her slanderous comment defiling the sanctity of the Prophet in the Islamic world.

The situation, though volatile, is under control. Police barricades and patrol vans have been put in place. Sensing tension, additional forces have been called in.

Meanwhile, Ms Sharma has also been booked in a FIR for hate speech. At least 32 people have been named in FIR filed by the Delhi Police, Thursday, for hate speech, inciting groups and creating situations that disturb peace and harmony in society.

Yati Narsinghanand, accused in the Haridwar hate speech case; journalist Saba Naqvi, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and religious groups are among those named.

The Delhi Police’s FIR has been made on the basis of analysing social media posts made just before and after the comments by Ms Sharma on TV. Sacked BJP spokesperson Naveen Jindal is among the 32 who face hate speech charges.

Mr Owaisi, who heads the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, or AIMIM, has questioned the Delhi Police for clubbing the hate speech case against sacked BJP spokesperson Naveen Jindal with others including himself. Mr Owaisi alleged the police, not wanting to upset those who supported Ms Sharma even after her comments on TV, did a balancing act by clubbing all the names.
