MI’s Add-Ons To Foster Values & Ethos, Ex-Players Amla, Katich In New Role

Owned by India’s multinational conglomerate company, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), headquartered at the financial capital of Mumbai, Mumbai Indians franchise announced the coaching staff for its SA20 team MI Cape Town on Thursday, September 15, 2022 ahead of the auctions scheduled on September 19.

The former Proteas player from South Africa, Hashim Amla has been assigned as the batting coach, while ex-Australian cricketer Simon Katich has been appointed as the team’s head coach.

Besides, the former New Zealand player James Pamment as the fielding coach and ex- South African cricketer Robin Peterson, the left arm spinner joined the coaching squad as General Manager.

Welcoming the new additions in the MI squad, Akash Ambani said, “I’m pleased to welcome Simon and Hashim to the MI Cape Town coaching team. Together with James and Robin, we’ll be a team that will grow the MI brand of cricket in South Africa and bring to this cricket-loving country the values and ethos MI stands for.”

However, Amla will largely be new to the role, Katich has coaching experience with Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore at different times in the Indian Premier League seasons.

Both the seasoned cricketers have expressed their opinions on getting this extraordinary chance. Welcoming the decision, Katich said that he was looking forward to assembling a new team, to hone skills and build a culture at large. He also mentioned that he will ensure that MI Cape Town builds a team that leverages the local talent and has MI’s core values at its heart.

Meanwhile, Hashim Amla said, “I’m thrilled to take up this role with MI Cape town. Big thanks to MI owners, management and my manager for facilitating this so smoothly. From everything they have planned, it seems like it’s going to be a wonderful platform that will attract our local talent. Bringing my experience as a player and mentor, I am excited to help MI Cape Town players bring the best out of themselves and also make SA cricket stronger.”

Besides, former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene and former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan were promoted to global roles by the MI team owners.

The job of the Global Head of Performance has been given to Jayawardene, who had previously led the MI team as its head-coach, while Khan has been appointed as the Global Head of Cricket Development and will manage MI’s core teams: MI Cape Town in the SA20, MI Emirates in the ILT20, and MI Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Notably, the SA20 team auction is scheduled to be held on September 19th, 2022. MI Cape Town has already signed five players ahead of the debut season. The MI Cape Town team consists of Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Rashid Khan, Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone.
