Morbi Nagarpalika Superseded By Gujarat Government

| Updated: April 11, 2023 21:36

Nearly five months after a foot bridge in Morbi in Gujarat collapsed killing 135 people, the Gujarat government, here on Tuesday night superseded the entire 52-member Morbi Nagarpalika following Gujarat High Court’s directions.

While an additional collector Narendra Mucchal has been given the charge of the Nagarpalika as the Chief Officer, the jailed Oreva Group Managing Director Jaysukh Patel is in prison. Oreva, a wall clock manufacturing company was awarded the foot bridge aka the suspension bridge contract. The bridge collapsed just four days after it was opened following renovation by the Oreva group.

After the incident took place, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had rushed to Morbi to personally monitor the rescue operations and medical services. He had announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 financial help to those injured in the accident. The chief minister had camped in Morbi till the rescue operations were on.

Meanwhile, the billionaire owner of Oreva Group was arrested in January for tardy implementation of the contract. He is now being assessed for psychiatric and mental health issues by a team of doctors.

Patel, the managing director of Ajanta Manufacturing Private Limited (AMPL)—the flagship company of Oreva Group, has been charged as the key accused in the bridge collapse incident.

The deck of Julto Pul, the historic suspension bridge across the Machchhu river in Morbi, had plunged into the river after its upstream cable snapped only four days after Patel’s company, which was responsible for the operations and maintenance of the bridge, threw it open to the public on October 26 after months-long repair and maintenance by a private contractor hired by AMPL.

Patel, two managers of his firm, two ticket-booking clerks at the bridge, three security guards and a private fabrication contractor and his father have been charged by the police in the case.

After being on the run for two months, despite a court-issued arrest warrant against him, Patel had eventually surrendered before a magistrate in Morbi on January 31, two days after police filed a charge sheet on January 28. Patel’s bail pleas have been rejected numerous times.
