The University Grants Commission (UGC) has cautioned students against taking admission in MPhil programmes and reclarified that it is not a recognized degree anymore. The University grants Commission had discontinued MPhil degree in 2022. The reiteration of the discontinuation of the degree recognition by the UGC came after it was noticed that some institutions continued to enroll students for MPhil courses. It was further clarified though that the rules will not affect the existing MPhil courses and students will be able to complete the term.
The commission ushered in certain reforms, which incude eligibility criteria for the test for enrolment in PhD. At the same time, the UGC barred the higher education institutions frominviting fresh applications for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) programme as per Regulation number 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations, 2022.
Eligibility to take the test for PhD enrolment include 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in four-year/ eight-semester bachelor’s degree programme while scholars with one-year/ two-semester master’s degree programme after a four-year bachelor’s programme are also eligible.
