Thirteen people died and 101 others were rescued after a ferry capsized while travelling to Elephanta Island from Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India.
The incident occurred during sea trials of a naval speed craft, which lost control and collided with the ferry Neelkamal. The craft’s engine had recently been replaced and the new engine was being tested.
However, the engine became stuck at full throttle, causing the vessel to go out of control. The naval boat had six people on board, including two naval personnel and four members from the company that supplied the engine.
There were reportedly more than 110 people on the ferry and six aboard the naval vessel.
The Coast Guard, Marine Police and Indian Navy all coordinated the initiation of the rescue operation. Eleven Navy vessels, three Marine Police boats and one Coast Guard vessel are actively searching the area as part of the operation. In order to find any remaining passengers, four helicopters have also been sent out for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that the ferry overturned after a speedboat that was reportedly owned by the Coast Guard or the Navy lost control and struck it.
