No 1 Test Team: India Falls To 2nd Spot Following ICC’s Goof-Up

| Updated: February 16, 2023 13:03

The International Cricket Council (ICC) addressed the error on their part of wrongly designating India as the No 1-ranked Test team on Wednesday. When India was listed as the Test World No 1 on the ICC’s official ranking list but was not mentioned in their release, confusion reigned supreme.

This was significant because, due to the error, India rose to the top spot simultaneously in all three formats, which had only happened once before. The Indian media went crazy over this incredible achievement, but the celebration was short-lived as the ICC corrected the mistake later that evening, restoring Australia to its rightful position as the top-ranked Test team.

People quickly realised that it was only an error on the part of the ICC as they struggled to comprehend what had just occurred. On Thursday, ICC released an official statement confirming Australia’s place at the top of the standings, where they gave a clarification on the gaffe.

“The ICC acknowledges, for a short period of time on February 15, 2023, that, due to a technical error, India was erroneously displayed as the No.1 Test team on the ICC website. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the ICC said.

Australia is in first place with 126 points, followed by India in second place with 115 points as both countries compete for a spot in the second World Test Championship final while playing in the high-profile Border Gavaskar Trophy Test series.

India has a 1-0 series advantage after winning the first Test in Nagpur by innings and 132 runs. The second match will begin tomorrow in Delhi. Ravichandran Ashwin, the No 2 Test bowler, overtook Australia skipper Pat Cummins at the top of the most recent ICC rankings, which is good news for India.
