Now, Kumbh Mela Adopts AI-Supported Surveillance

| Updated: January 22, 2025 14:41

In a room replete with rows of monitors and a phalanx of policemen, the security of the world’s largest religious gathering is managed with precision. Over 2,750 CCTV cameras placed around Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj are monitored round the clock by police at four Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCC), ensuring careful crowd management and security at the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Over 50,000 resources have been allocated to maintain safety, executing one of the 13 contingency plans where necessary.

The centres, staffed by more than 200 police officers, utilise advanced technology such as AI-supported surveillance, which tracks human movement and observes crowd density.

Amit Kumar, the Superintendent of Police and in charge of the ICCC, explained to the media that the main goal of these centres was to ensure high-level security and manage crowds effectively. The monitoring helps prevent disasters by controlling the flow of visitors, which can exceed 40 crore over 45 days.

The control centres display crucial data on 24 flat screens, including “flow rate” and “crowd density.” The flow rate shows the number of people entering or exiting various locations per minute, with green and red graphics highlighting areas of high traffic. When crowd density exceeds a predefined threshold, AI alerts prompt immediate action, such as traffic diversions or mobilising ground personnel.

Kumar added that whenever there was a crowd density issue or an unusual situation, alerts were sent out to officers on the ground.

The application of AI, boasting a 92% accuracy rate, monitors the flow of 50-60 lakh visitors daily through 16-17 access points. The centres additionally oversee parking availability at 100 lots distributed across 4,000 hectares of the provisional arrangement in Kumbh city.

With a budget close to Rs 7,000 crore, the Maha Kumbh Mela represents a huge logistical and security undertaking. Support from firms such as L&T, Vehant Technologies, and Synergy aids the police in their efforts to maintain the event’s safety and organization.

Kumar stressed that AI has not previously been utilised on such an extensive scale in India, underscoring the advanced technology implemented to manage the significant event.
